Rising star Thorén commits to full-season RX2e assault

Having made sporadic appearances in the series over the course of its first two years, Filip Thorén will embark upon a full campaign in the FIA RX2e Championship in 2023, as the rising Swedish star bids to accelerate his development on the FIA World Rallycross Championship undercard.

Following a formative career in karting and folkrace on the domestic scene, Thorén stepped up to rallycross and entered the last two events of the 2021 RX2e season, advancing to the final on his debut at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. He contested three more rounds last year en route to seventh in the overall standings.

Ahead of the forthcoming campaign the 20-year-old Hallsberg native has been busy testing in an effort to raise his game and take on the championship’s front-runners, with last year’s top three finishers – Viktor Vranckx, Isak Sjökvist and Nils Andersson – all similarly confirmed to return.

In an update to the cars for 2023, power has been increased from 250kW to 270kW, while there will now be a ‘Boost’ mode that delivers drivers an extra 80kW for 30 seconds during each race to increase overtaking opportunities and promote more strategic play.

“My goal this season is to continue my development as a driver, making progress more consistently towards the front end of the field,” Thorén revealed. “Hopefully we can make it to at least a couple of finals.

“The boost in power is, of course, a nice addition; the car feels even more connected to me as a driver and gives the option to send it even harder. I’m also really looking forward to going back to the great rallycross format again.

“The testing we have done ahead of the season has been very positive and has raised my confidence level sky-high ahead of the first event.”

The 2023 RX2e campaign will incorporate five rounds and will get underway in Hell, Norway on 17-18 June.
