Top 10 Drivers of the Year: Niclas Grönholm (6th)

As our Top 10 Drivers of the Year countdown continues across the FIA World Rallycross Championship, FIA RX2e Championship and FIA European Rallycross Championships (Euro RX1 and RX3), today, we reveal the driver you voted into 6th place – GRX-SET star Niclas Grönholm.

Niclas Grönholm has been knocking on the door of a World RX title challenge for a number of seasons now, and whilst 2021 was not ultimately to be the Finn’s year, he showed enough flashes of speed to prove that he will be a serious contender for glory should he return in 2022.

Grönholm’s season started out on the back foot when he was on the receiving end of contact in both Spain and Sweden, and a slow semi-final launch then scuppered what might have been more than a third-place finish in France.

He hit a ‘purple patch’ with victories in Latvia and Portugal – taking full advantage of a skirmish between chief rivals Timmy Hansen, Johan Kristoffersson and Kevin Hansen at Montalegre – but in-between, there was further disappointment in Belgium, where he was forced wide and out of the reckoning at the semi-final stage.

The GRX-SET star was again all too often in the wrong place at the wrong time at the Nürburgring, but another superbly opportunistic drive earned him the final victory of World RX’s combustion-powered era while elevating him to third in the Drivers’ standings at the last gasp – a career best.
