Timo Scheider has hailed a ‘great season-opener’ for ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport in the FIA World Rallycross Championship in Barcelona last weekend (23-24 July), and after being denied the opportunity to fight for a podium finish, the German has vowed to ‘push even harder next time’.
Scheider was one of the undisputed stars of the show at World RX of Catalunya behind the wheel of his SEAT Ibiza, as he proved to be consistently the leading threat to the Hansen brothers and multiple world champion Johan Kristoffersson throughout the qualifying stages in Spain.
After securing an excellent third spot in the intermediate classification, the two-time DTM title-winner was bullish about his prospects for success, only to find himself squeezed into the barriers on the opening lap of his semi-final, ending his challenge on the spot.
“It was a great season-opener for us,” Scheider affirmed. “We showed great pace and had a good chance to score a podium, but after a making great start in my semi-final and leading for a few metres, I got pushed offline and then taken out!
“That was obviously a shame after the speed we had all weekend, but it was nonetheless a good start for us and we now know that we are not too far off the pace of the factory-developed cars. We will push even harder next time...”
It was not only Scheider who shone for the German outfit around the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, as team-mates René Münnich and Mandie August similarly put on an encouraging display.
Team owner Münnich was never outside of the top ten during the qualifiers in the 16-strong field. After placing a superb seventh in the intermediate table, he went on to reach the final for the first time in his World RX career, ultimately finishing fifth – and he now leads the ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport trio in the same position in the Drivers’ standings.
August, meanwhile, was unlucky to miss out the semi-finals by the narrowest of margins, and could take a great deal of confidence from a commanding victory in her Q4 race.
“Although we perhaps didn’t come away with the kind of result that our pace promised, it was nevertheless a great start to the season for ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport in Barcelona,” summarised Team Manager, Dominik Greiner. “The whole team did a fantastic and flawless job all weekend, especially in such hot temperatures, which made it particularly stressful for the mechanics.
“Timo was on outstanding form throughout, and would surely have been right in the mix for the rostrum had he not been taken out in the semi-final through no fault of his own.
“On the other hand, I was extremely happy to see René advance to the final for the first time in the World Championship after a really strong performance. He has been a great supporter of rallycross for many, many years and to finish fifth underlines the progress he is continuing to make in his driving. Mandie, too, did a fabulous job and took another step forward – winning her Q4 race will I’m sure give her a real boost. We are all greatly looking forward to the remainder of the campaign!”
