Top 10 Drivers of the Year: Guillaume De Ridder (3rd)

We’re getting to the business end of our Top 10 Drivers of the Year countdown across the FIA World Rallycross Championship, FIA RX2e Championship and FIA European Rallycross Championships now – and in 3rd place, it’s inaugural RX2e Champion, Guillaume De Ridder.

The new, all-electric FIA RX2e Championship generated some of the closest and most competitive racing on the FIA World Rallycross Championship bill in 2021, but while some drivers shone at some circuits and others elsewhere, Guillaume De Ridder was a consistent contender throughout – and his reward was the coveted Drivers’ crown.

The Belgian was the driver to beat in Barcelona, making history as the first winner in an FIA electric rallycross championship – with further top four finishes at Höljes and Lohéac keeping his title bid firmly on-track.

Arch-rival Jesse Kallio looked to have got the better of him in his home round at Spa-Francorchamps, but De Ridder dug deep when it mattered most to turn the tables and enter the season finale holding a nine-point championship advantage.

Despite admitting to driving more cautiously with the bigger prize on his mind, the Alpine F1 Team Power Unit Performance Engineer held his nerve at the Nürburgring, where a couple of mistakes from the Finn guaranteed De Ridder a third triumph from five starts – and with it, the trophy he so dearly desired.
