Recently-crowned FIA European Rallycross Champion Andreas Bakkerud has been awarded the Gold Medal of Merit by the Norwegian Motorsport Association – making him the youngest competitor ever to receive the prestigious accolade.

Bakkerud was an 11th-hour addition to the Euro RX1 entry list in 2021, joining the fray in an ESmotorsport-run Škoda Fabia and reaching the rostrum first time out at Höljes. The Norwegian’s bid was hampered by an engine issue almost within sight of the chequered flag while on course to win at Lohéac and a semi-final clash in Riga, but he battled back at Spa-Francorchamps last month, with victory sealing the championship spoils by just four points.

The title came ten years on from his first European crown and on Bakkerud’s 30th birthday, and the celebrations continued in his hometown of Bergen last weekend, as the former Norwegian ASN Motorsport Talent and Golden Steering Wheel award recipient was again honoured during NMK Bergen’s 100th anniversary gala, in front of a 200-strong audience who offered him a standing ovation.

“This is amazing and a great surprise,” he acknowledged. “I am incredibly grateful and proud to receive such an award from the association.”
