KYB EKS JC was formed over the winter of 2020/21 out of a merger between two World Championship winners – Joel Christoffersson’s JC Raceteknik outfit and Mattias Ekström’s EKS RX operation.
EKS has been a feature of World RX since the series’ inception in 2014. Founder and double DTM Champion Mattias Ekström triumphed on home soil at Höljes in each of the first two seasons, before sweeping the board in 2016 as his eponymously-named squad sped to both Drivers’ and Teams’ glory under the EKS RX banner.
Ekström then won the opening three rounds of the following campaign, but ultimately fell short of a second consecutive crown as he placed second in the Drivers’ standings. EKS – now benefitting from full Audi factory backing – ranked third in the Teams’ classification.
The Swede secured the runner-up spoils again in 2018, with new team-mate Andreas Bakkerud just behind in third and the pair tallying ten podium finishes between them. Audi subsequently withdraw from the championship at the end of that year, prompting a private entry for Krisztián Szabó in 2019.
Ekström returned to the fray for another title assault in 2020, competing for KYB Team JC in a technical partnership with EKS. JC Raceteknik’s full-time World Championship debut came off the back of its most successful season to-date in 2019 – when Robin Larsson lifted the laurels in both FIA Euro RX and RallyX Nordic – and together, Ekström and Larsson delivered the squad the World RX Teams’ trophy at the first time of asking, with the former finishing second in the Drivers’ table once again.
