Better known by his sobriquet ‘Knapick’, Hervé Lemonnier began competing in 1966 when he entered the Rallye Côte Fleurie in his home region of Normandy in northern France. Working as a farm machinery dealer at the time, he chose to change his surname for his motorsport exploits so his customers would not realise he was a ‘crazy car racer’.
He subsequently turned his attentions to rallycross, debuting in the European Championship in 1979 and reaching the rostrum with a third-place finish at Lohéac in 2001. Since the inception of the World Championship in 2014, Knapick has made sporadic appearances at the highest level, celebrating half a century of racing in 2016 and scoring points for the first time in Latvia in 2017 at the age of 70.
The Frenchman is also a podium-finisher in the Andros Trophy ice racing series, with his daughters Marie-Laure and Anne-Sophie and his nephew Xavier similarly going on to forge successful careers in the sport.
