Euro RX of Hungary

One of the longest and most traditional rallycross tracks in Europe, ‘old-school’ Nyirád Racing Center is located in Transdanubia, just 25 kilometres from Hungary’s famous Lake Balaton.

In addition to staging national-level events, Nyirád played host to the FIA European Rallycross Championship on seven occasions between 2006 and 2013, yielding victories for drivers of the calibre of Kenneth Hansen, Sverre Isachsen, Timmy Hansen, Andreas Bakkerud, Timur Timerzyanov and Reinis Nitišs – many of them going on to win the title after winning in Hungary.

The circuit is on the site of a former bauxite quarry, with the characteristic red colour of its unsealed surfaces earning it the nickname ‘Red Cauldron’. That – along with its technical curves and dramatic elevation changes – is one of Nyirád’s defining features.

Running in an anti-clockwise direction, the standard lap is 1,220 metres in length – increasing to 1,290 metres when the ‘Joker’ is taken into account – with marginally more asphalt than gravel. Its width – up to 16 metres in places – offers several good overtaking opportunities and helps to generate spectacular racing.
