The racing in Istanbul was fast and frenetic throughout
– and many of the most memorable moments involved Johan Kristoffersson, who
wrapped up his seventh world championship crown with a gritty performance by fighting
his way from third to first in heat two on Saturday behind the wheel of his
sustainably-fuelled, internal combustion-engined Volkswagen.
The Hansen brothers were similarly very much in
the mix in their electric Peugeots, as was Niclas Grönholm for CE Dealer Team
by Volvo Construction Equipment, with the flying Finn putting up a staunch
defence against Kristoffersson on more than one occasion and pulling off some
of the best starts of the event.
There was a tactical masterclass from Hansen
World RX Team in Sunday’s final to scupper new winner Ole Christian Veiby’s shot at snatching
the runner-up spoils in the title table. The Norwegian, Kevin Hansen and Timmy Hansen
frequently found themselves in close proximity, while rising star Patrick O’Donovan
produced a characteristically committed display on his top-flight return, with
the young Brit the architect of some awe-inspiring overtakes.
And then, of course, there was PGRX duo Juha
Rytkönen and Steven Bossard. The Finn stunned seasoned observers by beating Kristoffersson
on the second day to claim his maiden World RX victory in only his ninth
appearance at the highest level, with his French team-mate getting
well-and-truly stuck in on his series debut, engaging in a number of crowd-pleasing
doorhandle-to-doorhandle duels with more experienced rivals.
