Having
won his heat one race on the Saturday, six-time FIA World Rallycross Champion
Johan Kristoffersson sought to further stamp his authority on proceedings in
heat two by flinging his KMS - HORSE Powertrain Volkswagen Polo KMS 601 RX
boldly around the outside of his rivals into Turn One – three of them in
theoretically faster-starting electric machinery.
As
he turned in to take the corner, the Swede was tagged sideways by Niclas Grönholm
and had to draw upon all of his legendary skill and car control to keep the back end of his car
out of the circuit’s unforgiving barriers. Kristoffersson had stretched his
advantage to just over a second when he suddenly slowed with technical issues
at the end of lap two.
Twenty-four
hours later, Klara Andersson returned to the World RX rostrum as the CE Dealer
Team by Volvo Construction Equipment ace maintained her stellar start to the
2024 campaign. Key to the result was a decisive joker in the final – and an
even more decisive merge.
As
Andersson dived into the joker on lap three, she was nip-and-tuck with Ole
Christian Veiby and Kevin Hansen on the standard racing line – and as she rejoined the
track, she slotted neatly in-between the pair into third position, with barely
a blanket able to be thrown over the trio and fifth-placed Timmy Hansen. She thereafter
held station through to the chequered flag.
It
was one of many breathless moments over the course of the weekend – and one thoroughly
deserving of the season’s fourth ‘Hoosier Highlight’.
