Kristoffersson turns up the tempo as testing concludes

Johan Kristoffersson signalled his intention to clinch an extraordinary seventh Drivers’ crown in the FIA World Rallycross Championship by topping the timesheets in both sessions on the second and final day of pre-season testing at Höljes in Sweden today (2 July).

Although times were not quite as quick as in the warmer conditions on Monday, with the reigning world champion stopping the clocks a smidgen slower than he had done 24 hours earlier, the name at the head of the order remained unchanged, as Kristoffersson punched in a late ‘flyer’ to spearhead a KMS – HORSE Powertrain one-two.

Ole Christian Veiby ran his team-mate closest, as the two sustainably-fuelled VW Polo KMS 601 RX combustion cars outpaced all of their rivals around Höljes Motorstadion, which will host the campaign’s double-header curtain-raising contest in just a few days’ time (6-7 July) – rallycross’ legendary ‘Magic Weekend’, and the beginning of World RX’s eagerly-anticipated new ‘Battle of Technologies’.

After some 442 laps of running – taking the total across the two-day test to 781 – the drivers from second down to eighth on Tuesday were blanketed by less than four tenths-of-a-second, auguring well for an extremely competitive season ahead.

Timmy Hansen upheld electric honours in third in his Peugeot 208 RX1e, a scant 0.031s adrift of Veiby, with Niclas Grönholm stating the case for CE Dealer Team by Volvo Construction Equipment narrowly behind in fourth.

Gustav Bergström ended up fifth in his Kristoffersson Motorsport Volkswagen RX1e, a fraction ahead of 2023 championship runner-up Kevin Hansen in the second Hansen World RX Team entry and CE Dealer Team’s Klara Andersson.

Four of the ten competitors put more than 50 laps on the board, with World RX newcomer Sondre Evjen completing the most on his way to eighth for Kristoffersson Motorsport, barely a tenth-of-a-second behind stablemate Bergström.
