BTCC champion interested in Coventry cameo in World RX

Former British Touring Car Champion Tom Ingram has said he would ‘love to have a go’ in the FIA World Rallycross Championship in Coventry next year.

Ingram is one of the biggest names on the British racing scene, as the 2022 champion in the BTCC – the UK’s premier motorsport series – and a top three championship finisher on three further occasions. Approaching the midway stage of the current campaign, he is once again in the thick of the title fight, placed third overall.

The Coventry-based star entered the Lydden Hill round of the British Rallycross Championship in 2015 behind the wheel of an RX150 buggy. He admitted he was intrigued to learn that World RX and MotoFest Coventry are in discussions to bring a round of the World Championship to the UK’s ‘Motor City’ in 2025 – what would be only the second downtown event in the series’ history, inspired by the success of last season’s double-header finale in Hong Kong.

“I’ve always been interested in rallycross,” the 30-year-old remarked. “I had an absolute ball racing one of Ollie O’Donovan’s buggies in the British Championship, so when I saw the news that World RX might be coming to Coventry next year, it naturally piqued my interest.

“Although my primary focus is clearly on the BTCC, I’ve followed rallycross as closely as I can and to see those crazy monsters blasting around Coventry city centre would be epic – an incredible spectacle. I wasn’t around in the days of the Birmingham Superprix, but I’ve heard so much about it and to recreate that kind of vibe and adrenaline rush for drivers and fans would be something else.

“The current World RX cars look insane and people like [Johan] Kristoffersson, [Mattias] Ekström and ‘AJ’ (Andrew Jordan) have shown that there are many transferable skills between the two disciplines and that touring car drivers can be very successful in the sport – so yeah, personally, I’d love to have a go!”

Fellow BTCC champion Jordan contested six World RX rounds between 2014 and 2018, finishing on the podium on his debut at Lydden Hill.
