Rutkauskas reaches rostrum in Euro RX3 warm-up

As he prepares to embark upon his maiden full campaign of FIA European Rallycross Championship competition in 2024, Rytis Rutkauskas gave himself a pre-season boost with a starring performance in Germany’s Deutsche Rallycross Meisterschaft (DRX) last weekend (8-9 June).

Rutkauskas’ only previous appearance on the European scene came at the Nürburgring at the end of 2022, when he piloted a Volland Racing Audi A1 to ninth place overall in Euro RX3. The Lithuanian will return to the fray with the multiple title-winning outfit this year, and by way of a warm-up, he contested the DRX round at Valkenswaard’s Eurocircuit in the Netherlands, reaching the rostrum in third position in a Super1600 category that included former European champion, Sven Seeliger.

He was joined on-track by young rookie team-mate Nico Geleyns, who will be making his international debut this season, having only begun racing three years ago in autocross on the island of Antigua, where he is based.

The teenage prodigy – still just 17 – posted a top ten finish in the 13-strong field in heat two at Valkenswaard, his first-ever rallycross event, but a DNF in heat three cost him a spot in the semi-finals.

The forthcoming Euro RX campaign will get underway at Höljes’ ‘Magic Weekend’ in Sweden on 6-7 July, before calling into Nyirád in Hungary (27-28 July), Mettet in Belgium (17-18 August) and Montalegre in Portugal (7-8 September). All rounds will be in support of the FIA World Rallycross Championship.
