Kárai wants more with upgraded Audi in 2024

Having equalled his best-ever finish in the title standings last year, experienced FIA European Rallycross Championship protagonist Tamás Kárai is aiming to climb the order in 2024 – with his pre-season form giving the Hungarian plenty of cause for encouragement.

Kárai concluded the 2023 Euro RX1 campaign placed fifth overall – the same as in 2022, albeit with a higher points total and a brace of rostrum results behind the wheel of his Audi S1 in Norway and Belgium. In a high-calibre field, he reached the final more often than not.

Indeed, the Orosháza native – who celebrated his 50th birthday not long after the end of the season – is arguably getting quicker with age, and as the 2024 curtain-raiser at Höljes in Sweden approaches apace, he makes it clear that he has absolutely no intention of taking his foot off the gas pedal...

“We have brought several developments to the Audi which worked well in testing at the beginning of the year,” Kárai revealed. “I then raced the car in both the Hungarian and French series, which went brilliantly. The first was at Nyirád, where it is particularly important that we are competitive, and then I also made my debut in the opening round of the French Championship, fighting for the top spot in a field of 18 Supercars.

“I’m satisfied with what I’ve seen so far, and in Euro RX1, I want to move up the standings in 2024. Last season, I twice finished on the third step of the podium. Seeing the entry list, the job certainly won’t be any easier this year, but we are up for the fight!"

Following the ‘Magic Weekend’ on 6-7 July, the FIA European Rallycross Championship will call into Nyirád in Hungary (27-28 July), Mettet in Belgium (17-18 August) and Montalegre in Portugal (7-8 September).
