‘Dream come true’ for Kovács as rookie targets Euro RX3 rostrum

Sámuel Kovács will make his FIA European Rallycross Championship debut in 2024, and while acknowledging that it will necessarily be a ‘learning’ year, the young Hungarian is nonetheless setting his sights high.

Kovács began competing in cars at the age of 14, spending two seasons in the Hungarian Junior Rallycross Cup before switching to the Mazda MX-5 category, in which he achieved a number of wins. In 2021, the Budapest native placed second overall in the single-make Hankook Racer Cup, prior to graduating to S1600 level on the domestic scene with Korda Racing the following year and securing third in the final standings.

He improved again to conclude last season as championship runner-up, and now Kovács is ready to test his mettle on the international stage for the first time behind the wheel of a Škoda Fabia in Euro RX3, in the same team as Euro RX1 front-runner Máté Benyó.

“It’s a dream come true,” the 20-year-old reflected. “I’m very excited to compete for Korda Racing in the European Championship this year alongside Máté. It will be a big challenge for me to race on unfamiliar tracks against some of the world’s best drivers, and the first year will be about learning and gaining experience in the international environment.

“I am constantly preparing for what is to come, both mentally and physically and have been busy with some simulator racing. I will do my best as always and hope to be able to repay the team’s support with some podium finishes – that’s my personal goal.”

Following the forthcoming Essay curtain-raiser on 8-9 June, the Euro RX1 campaign will continue with World Championship-supporting rounds at Höljes in Sweden (6-7 July), Nyirád in Hungary (27-28 July), Mettet in Belgium (17-18 August) and Montalegre in Portugal (7-8 September).
