Kovács began competing in cars at
the age of 14, spending two seasons in the Hungarian Junior Rallycross Cup
before switching to the Mazda MX-5 category, in which he achieved a number of
wins. In 2021, the Budapest native placed second overall in the single-make Hankook
Racer Cup, prior to graduating to S1600 level on the domestic scene with Korda
Racing the following year and securing third in the final standings.
He improved again to conclude last
season as championship runner-up, and now Kovács is ready to test his mettle on
the international stage for the first time behind the wheel of a Škoda Fabia in
Euro RX3, in the same team as Euro RX1 front-runner Máté Benyó.
“It’s a dream come true,” the
20-year-old reflected. “I’m very excited to compete for Korda Racing in the
European Championship this year alongside Máté. It will be a big challenge for
me to race on unfamiliar tracks against some of the world’s best drivers, and the
first year will be about learning and gaining experience in the international
environment.
“I am constantly preparing for what
is to come, both mentally and physically and have been busy with some simulator
racing. I will do my best as always and hope to be able to repay the team’s
support with some podium finishes – that’s my personal goal.”
Following the forthcoming Essay
curtain-raiser on 8-9 June, the Euro RX1 campaign will continue with World
Championship-supporting rounds at Höljes in Sweden (6-7 July), Nyirád in
Hungary (27-28 July), Mettet in Belgium (17-18 August) and Montalegre in Portugal
(7-8 September).
