Benyó setting sights on silverware in 2024

Reigning ‘Rookie of the Year’ Máté Benyó is targeting ‘podium finishes and even victories’ in the FIA European Rallycross Championship in 2024, as the Hungarian rejoins the Euro RX1 grid with an upgraded car and a season’s worth of experience under his belt.

A relative unknown on the international stage heading into the campaign, Benyó was a revelation in 2023, reaching the final on his debut on home soil at Nyirád – in the company of heavy-hitters Anton Marklund, Jānis Baumanis, Andreas Bakkerud, Patrick O’Donovan and Enzo Ide – and placing inside the top four in the intermediate standings in Portugal and Norway, on both occasions at circuits that were new to him.

Ninth in the title table come the end of the season, the 22-year-old Korda Racing ace is focussed on climbing the order this year – and converting his palpable potential into some champagne celebrations.

“I’m very excited!” Benyó enthused. “I’m grateful to my team and sponsors for providing me with the opportunity to continue my international career in Euro RX1. The car and the team remain unchanged, which I don’t mind at all – as the saying goes, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!’

“The Peugeot 208 has received some upgrades over the winter break, which we expect will improve its performance, and I’ve also been working hard on myself during the preparation period, so I feel confident going into the new season.

“Aside from France, I have some experience of all the other tracks now, so we have useful information about them, which is definitely a positive. Essay will be an unknown for me, but based on our analysis of on-board videos, I like its characteristics and I’ll be working to quickly find my rhythm there as well.

“My main goal for the season is to deliver consistent and strong performances and to qualify for the final as many times as possible. Additionally, I want to achieve podium finishes and even victories!”

Following the forthcoming Essay curtain-raiser on 8-9 June, the Euro RX1 campaign will continue with World Championship-supporting rounds at Höljes in Sweden (6-7 July), Nyirád in Hungary (27-28 July), Mettet in Belgium (17-18 August) and Montalegre in Portugal (7-8 September).
