Dubourg back in the saddle for home soil rodeo

Andréa Dubourg is set to rejoin the FIA European Rallycross Championship for the first time in almost three years, after announcing his participation in next month’s 2024 curtain-raiser at Essay in France (8-9 June).

Dubourg is no stranger to success on the international stage. Son of 1992 European Autocross Champion Dominique Dubourg and younger brother of multiple Andros Trophy winner Jean Baptiste ‘JB’ Dubourg, the Frenchman made his debut in Euro RX at Super1600 (now Euro RX3) level on home soil at Essay in 2011, narrowly missing the final first time out.

He returned to the fray three years later at Lohéac, racing to a podium finish in a Renault Clio. A full campaign in 2015 yielded another four rostrum visits – including a maiden victory in Barcelona – en route to fifth in the overall standings.

In 2017, the Bordeaux native stepped up to the headlining Supercar (now Euro RX1) category in a DA Racing Citroën DS3, scoring points in three of his five starts. A switch to a Peugeot 208 in 2018 vaulted him from 22nd up to 12th in the Drivers’ classification, before he improved again to fourth in 2019, advancing to the final on four occasions and reaching the rostrum in Latvia.

Further trips to the podium in 2020 and 2021 secured Dubourg fifth in the championship in both seasons, and the 31-year-old is now preparing to dust off his overalls and climb back into the cockpit of his trusty Peugeot to take on Europe’s crème de la crème once more at the Circuit des Ducs.

“I’m very excited to be coming back to Euro RX,” he enthused. “I’ve not raced a Supercar since 2021, so it’s fantastic to get the opportunity again. Essay is a very special track for me. It was where I drove one of the first races of my career, in the European Championship in a Super1600 Citroën Saxo in 2011, so that’s a very nice memory.

“We had a car available for next month’s event, and it’s a great pleasure for me to get back behind the wheel. I’m aware I’ll need to quickly settle back into the groove as the calibre in Euro RX is very high, and while I’m going to Essay to have fun, I also want – as always – to put in the best performance possible.

“Maybe there will be additional outings later in the season or in the coming years, but right now, I’m looking forward to this ‘one-off’ appearance at a circuit I’ve always enjoyed.”
