Wlömer: RX2e tryout has whetted my appetite for more

Luka Wlömer is evaluating a change of discipline after sampling the FIA RX2e Championship’s ZEROID X1 during a test at Essay in France last month, describing the experience as ‘everything you want to do on a regular road but you’re not allowed’.

Wlömer is one of the rising stars on the German motorsport scene. After winning the German Electric Kart Championship (DEKM) in 2020, the Berlin native graduated into cars, impressively adding another title to his burgeoning CV straightaway as eight victories propelled him to the Porsche Sprint Challenge crown the following year.

He subsequently stepped up again to the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland, scoring points in only his fourth race in the championship at Hockenheim, but now, he is considering steering his focus in a rather different and more sustainable direction...

“After I won the electric karting championship in 2020, I looked into electric car racing series,” the 22-year-old explains. “I remember coming across RX2e – which was just starting out at the time – but then an investor came along who wanted me to race in Porsches, so that’s what I did.

“Since then, I’ve seen how much of a struggle it is now to find sponsors for conventional combustion-engined racing – the last three years have been the hardest of my career in that respect – so when I found out there were going to be some pre-season RX2e tests, I thought, ‘Why not? Let’s go!’

“Coming from circuit racing, I obviously had to get my head around a totally new driving style, and it took me a few sessions to get to grips with the different lines you need to take, using the handbrake, driving on gravel and the transition from one surface to another – but I loved it!

“Everybody talks about the instant torque and power, but everything about the ZEROID X1 just works well and makes it fun and rewarding to drive. The team at QEV Technologies was hugely supportive, and I figured it out and felt comfortable pretty quickly. I really enjoyed sliding the car around – it’s everything you want to do on a regular road but you’re not allowed!

“I never really thought about going into rallycross or rallying when I was younger, but this has definitely whetted my appetite and I would love to see how I get on in a race situation. Now I need to see if I can get some sponsors on-board to make that possible...”
