Spiezia having ‘a blast’ as he prepares for RX2e debut

FIA RX2e Championship rookie Ellis Spiezia has been accelerating his preparations ahead of his maiden campaign in the FIA World Rallycross Championship support series this year, as he continues to get to grips with the all-electric ZEROID X1.

Spiezia confirmed last week that he will join the grid for the forthcoming RX2e season with QEV Technologies. Having got an initial taste for the car at Calafat Circuit in Spain, the 18-year-old American subsequently headed to Essay in France – scene of the 2024 curtain-raising contest on 8-9 June – to increase his experience behind the wheel.

“The car is just such a blast to drive,” enthused Spiezia, who will become only the second American driver to race in RX2e, after Conner Martell in 2021. “Having that instant electric horsepower behind you when you’re getting off the line, the overall smoothness and how refined the package is makes it really fun.”

Spiezia is no stranger to electric technology, having spent his career to-date competing in sustainably-focussed series, from e-karting to the ERA Championship and the NXT Gen Cup. He regards RX2e as the logical direction in which to steer his burgeoning career.

“When I was considering last year what my next step was going to be, I wanted the challenge of moving into a new discipline with more power and performance and RX2e was the clear choice,” explained the New Jersey native, who is currently living in Germany. “It’s a great opportunity to step into something new, learn a lot and have room to grow with World RX having electric and sustainably-fuelled combustion cars going head-to-head now.

“I’m really excited for my first-ever season in rallycross. I get to go up against the best of the best in equal materials – and it’s fully electric, of course. Let’s see where I stack up at the first round!”
