Gustav Bergström headed into the 2023 FIA World Rallycross Championship bidding to establish himself as a consistent contender off the back of a promising rookie year during which he had progressed from a relative unknown into a three-time podium-finisher.

Much was expected of the talented young Swede in his sophomore season in the top-flight, but it was a campaign that would flatter to deceive. After briefly taking the fight to motorsport legend Sébastien Loeb on day one in the Portuguese curtain-raiser, a series of spins and crashes 24 hours later brought a premature end to his challenge.

His best result came in Hell, where he missed out on reaching the final by barely half-a-second, and in the two SuperPole sessions he contested, Bergström placed fifth and fourth, proving that his raw speed is certainly not in question. After round three at Höljes, however, the 20-year-old did not return. It remains to be seen whether there will be a second chapter to his World Rallycross career...
