Hansen: ‘So important that we can complete the season’

Kenneth Hansen has hailed the ‘huge effort’ behind-the-scenes to get the 2023 World RX campaign back on-track in Cape Town and downtown Hong Kong.

Kenneth Hansen has hailed the ‘huge effort’ behind-the-scenes to get the 2023 FIA World Rallycross Championship campaign back on-track and stage the final two scheduled events in Cape Town and downtown Hong Kong.

It was revealed last week that the World RX title fight – on-hold since the fire at Lydden Hill on 21 July – will resume using single-specification ZEROID X1 cars in South Africa next month (7-8 October), as the championship returns to Killarney International Raceway for the first time in four years.

At least eight drivers are confirmed for the double-header event, including Hansen World RX Team stablemates Kevin and Timmy Hansen – currently third and fifth in the title standings. The latter clinched the World Championship crown in Cape Town at the end of a dramatic weekend in 2019, and both brothers have recent experience of the all-electric ZEROID X1, having contested the FIA RX2e Championship round at Mettet in Belgium last month.

“We’re really excited to be back racing in the World Championship again,” enthused Team Principal, 14-time FIA European Rallycross Champion, Kenneth Hansen. “It’s a huge effort from everyone involved – the promoter, the FIA and the teams – to pull together a solution after it looked impossible to continue this year.

“It’s a huge achievement and so important that we are able to complete the season, and it’s great that everyone will be using the RX2e cars for the final two events. We have great memories from Cape Town, where we won our first World RX Drivers’ title in 2019, and we will see closer racing than ever with everyone running the same specification of cars.

“This also buys us more time to prepare for 2024 and beyond, where we will continue our growth as a sport in terms of a racing and commercial product and of course for us as a team within that. We are fully invested in moving forward with rallycross into an exciting future.”

The Hansens will be joined in South Africa and Hong Kong (11-12 November) by CE Dealer Team duo Niclas Grönholm and Klara Andersson, both of whom competed in RX2e at Germany’s Estering just over a fortnight ago, finishing respectively fourth and fifth.

“It was good to be back on-track and racing again,” acknowledged Team Manager, Jussi Pinomäki. “We knew the competition in RX2e would be tough, and we reached our goal of getting both cars into the final – I think we put on a great show for all of our partners and guests.

“While we of course would have liked to return with our RX1e cars, we look forward to continuing to push the boundaries of sustainable motorsport with our RX2e cars [in Cape Town and Hong Kong]. This enables us to provide our fans and partners with two exciting final race weekends in 2023 and then return even stronger in 2024.”
