Litwinowicz wins Euro RX3 title following bruising finale

Damian Litwinowicz came out on top of an intra-team duel with Volland Racing stablemate Espen Isaksætre at Germany’s Estering last weekend (19-20 August) to be crowned 2023 Euro RX3 champion at the end of a bruising final.

Litwinowicz and Isaksætre entered the event separated by only five points in the title table, with the Pole holding the advantage in the standings but the Norwegian carrying the momentum after winning the penultimate round of the campaign at Höljes in Sweden.

That gap was further narrowed to just two points after the heat races, with Isaksætre topping the intermediate classification while Litwinowicz could manage no better than fourth.

From pole position in the opening semi-final, Isaksætre led into Turn One but was then pushed from behind, sending his Audi straight on and costing him 12 seconds. A distant fourth place at the chequered flag looked to have spelt the end of his championship ambitions, before a penalty for one of his assailants elevated the Flisa native into the final.

Isaksætre duly lined up fourth on the grid for the weekend’s most important race, with Litwinowicz just behind in fifth – but contact between the pair and team-mate Nils Volland over the course of a wild opening lap culminated in both title protagonists ending up in the wall in the joker.

For Litwinowicz, it was game over, while Isaksætre was able to continue to cross the finish line fifth, but then found himself disqualified after he was deemed to have been the instigator of the contact. The Poznan native’s despair at having to watch the race unfold from the sidelines turned into jubilation as he was handed the champion’s trophy...

The event was won – following a technical disqualification for Jens Hvaal – by series returnee Dylan Dufas, whose best result from two prior Euro RX3 outings had been a lowly 13th place. The Frenchman led home countryman and team-mate David Bouet in a popular RX Evolution one-two, as the duo impressed with their pace weekend-long.
