Kristoffersson: My first challenge is to fit in the car...

Johan Kristoffersson has quipped that the first challenge during his FIA RX2e Championship debut at Mettet this weekend (5-6 August) will be shoehorning his 6’4” frame into the car, as he bids to win the only event that escaped his grasp when the FIA World Rallycross Championship last visited the popular Belgian circuit back in 2018.

Five-time world champion Kristoffersson, Volkswagen Dealerteam BAUHAUS stablemate Ole Christian Veiby as well as Hansen brothers Timmy and Kevin will all join the RX2e regulars for an eagerly-anticipated battle around the Circuit Jules Tacheny.

Kristoffersson’s protégé – joint RX2e championship leader Nils Andersson – has been accustomed to seeking guidance and advice from his mentor over the course of the season to-date. This time, the older Swede acknowledges, the boot will be on the other foot...

“I’m really looking forward to it, but it’s not going to be easy to adjust to RX2e,” mused the 34-year-old Arvika native. “There is significantly less power than in the RX1e car I’m used to driving, and while I have tried the RX2e car twice, of course there is a lot still to learn about it.

“I hope Nils can provide us with some information, but the first problem for me is how to fit in the car – it’s crowded in there. I hope we can find a solution to that!”

Five years ago, Kristoffersson won every round of the World RX campaign except for Mettet, so a victory in RX2e would go a little way to banishing that memory. He is clear, however, that he ‘does not want to come in and influence the championship in one direction or the other’ during his guest appearance in the series.

Veiby, for his part, will be getting behind the wheel of the RX2e car for the first time, and like his team-mate, he is similarly looking forward to his weekend’s mission.

“There will be a lot of new things to learn,” the Norwegian reflected. “I haven’t driven the car before, but when I was asked if I wanted to do this, I immediately said yes. It promises to be great fun and we’ll be going all-in!”

“The show must go on!” added team principal, Tommy Kristoffersson. “We have a responsibility towards our sponsors, the media channels that cover us and not least our fans, and as soon as it became clear that World RX could not race in Belgium, we started working to find alternatives.

“It will be a new dimension and a big challenge for the whole team. We are very positive about this opportunity and will make sure to put on a superb show in a tough and tight championship.”
