Portugal’s Circuito Internacional de Montalegre – which will play host to the opening round of the forthcoming FIA World Rallycross Championship campaign on 3-4 June – has outlined its plans to attain FIA three-star environmental accreditation in 2023.
The FIA’s environmental accreditation programme is designed to ensure stakeholders in motorsport competitions evaluate and improve their environmental performance.
Last year, the sport’s governing body certified Montalegre’s environmental responsibility plan at two-star level, recognising the venue’s efforts to minimise the environmental impact of the event. Now, the local organiser and municipality are bidding to bolster their green credentials with a view to achieving the highest standard.
The Barroso circuit – which hosted the very first World RX event back in 2014 and rapidly became a favourite amongst competitors and fans alike – is this year celebrating its 25th anniversary, and as it strives to reinforce its environmental credentials for June’s World Championship curtain-raiser, it has committed to implementing a number of measures.
These include:
- Using renewable energies where possible
- Promoting the efficient use of water via devices that control the flow
- Re-using wastewater where possible to irrigate the circuit in-between races
- When choosing suppliers, taking into account their environmental performance
- Seeking to use services and products with a positive environmental record
- Encouraging local fans to use buses provided by the organisation to travel to and from the track
- Using the municipality’s electric vehicles for travel by members of the organisation
- Promoting reusable products in order to minimise waste from disposable plastic
- Reducing the number of documents printed on paper in favour of digital formats
