Top 10 Drivers of 2022: Ole Christian Veiby (9th)

We’ve counted the votes, and here – in ascending order – are your top 10 drivers of the 2022 rallycross campaign across all four categories. In ninth position is a driver who – prior to the start of the season – had not competed in World RX for almost seven years...

Series: World RX
Championship Position: 4th
Wins: 0
Podium Finishes: 5 (2nd/2nd/3rd/3rd/3rd)

At the midway point of the 2022 FIA World Rallycross Championship, Ole Christian Veiby looked odds-on to make it a Kristoffersson Motorsport one-two in the Drivers’ standings, as he proved to be the perfect rear-gunner to multiple world championship-winning stablemate Johan Kristoffersson.

It is true that the Norwegian had arguably the best car in the field at his disposal in the well-sorted Volkswagen RX1e, but it is equally true that he had been away from the World RX scene for almost seven years, and had only recently begun competing in the discipline again.

If he was at all rusty, it didn’t show, as Veiby immediately reached the rostrum in the curtain-raiser on home soil in Hell, going on to add three more podium appearances to his tally over the opening half of the season – and although he rarely got the better of his all-conquering team-mate, he was never very far away, either.

The intervention of persistent technical troubles then stopped the 26-year-old’s momentum in its tracks and dropped him to fourth in the final classification. While that was clearly a source of frustration, it did not detract from Veiby’s performance behind the wheel in what was on balance a hugely encouraging comeback campaign.
