Rising talent Tamm keen to ‘continue rallycross progression’ in 2026

Maiko Tamm stunned the FIA European Rallycross Championship community when he came, saw and conquered on his Euro RX1 debut at Finland’s KymiRing back in the summer – and next year, he is hoping for more.

Tamm has spent the past three seasons honing his craft and developing his skills in the Scandinavia-based RallyX series, beating former RX2e champion Viktor Vranckx to Pro Am Open 4WD honours as a rookie in 2023 and improving to third overall in the headlining category this year.

In August, he travelled to Finland to contest the penultimate round of the 2025 Euro RX1 campaign. Straight off the bat, he demonstrated that he would be a force to be reckoned with.

After topping the timesheets in the high-calibre field during free practice, the young Estonian went third-quickest in Q1 and was looking to build upon that in Q2, making a demon start but finding himself sent into a spectacular 360-degree spin following contact with Yury Belevskiy into Turn One – prompting an equally spectacular save.

Another rocket-propelled launch paved the way to a dominant race win in Q3, and behind the wheel of his distinctively-liveried Ford Fiesta, Tamm once again got the holeshot in Q4, only to run too deep into the first corner, restricting him to seventh spot in the intermediate classification.

From fourth on the grid in a wet semi-final, the 21-year-old took advantage of the three title contenders tripping over one another shortly after the start to grab a lead that he refused to relinquish, artfully fending his rivals off right the way to the chequered flag.

He subsequently overhauled a fast-starting Mikko Ikonen with a peach of a pass into Turn Two in the all-important final, going on to sprint clear and flash across the finish line more than six seconds ahead of his closest pursuer to deservedly ascend the highest step of the podium.

“It was a fantastic way to sign off my season,” acknowledged Tamm. “I’d already won at the KymiRing in RallyX earlier in the year, but to repeat that result in the European Championship was amazing.

“My main goal for the weekend was to find out where I stood against the best rallycross drivers in Europe, and to see if we had the speed to fight for the top positions. Immediately in free practice, we saw we were on the pace, which was an incredible feeling. We showed that again in Q1, and with every race, I kept gaining in experience.

“It’s not so simple to get to grips with the KymiRing track. The first corner can catch you out, and it’s easy to make a mistake, which is one of the things that held me back on the first day, but I managed to keep a cool head and stay focused on my objectives and I learnt so much in the process.

“The final was very intense. I knew the guys behind were pushing hard, and before he retired, Yury [Belevskiy] was flying. That said, being a one-off entry, I had nothing to lose in terms of the championship so I didn’t feel too much pressure and I was actually able to stay very relaxed. My mindset was very much that I just wanted to enjoy it, and that seemed to pay off!

“I don’t yet know what I’ll be doing next year, but I hope to be able to continue my progression in rallycross. We’ll take a bit of time, see how things go and then come up with a plan.”
