Hansens ‘exploring every possible avenue’ to get back on the grid

September’s World RX of Türkiye double-header was notable for a number of reasons – not least of which the fact that it marked the first time Hansen Motorsport had not appeared on an FIA World Rallycross Championship grid. While the ultra-successful Swedish outfit is not yet in a position to firm up its plans for next season, it is working hard to rejoin the international pinnacle of the sport sooner rather than later.

With the World Championship taking a brief two-year hiatus prior to returning under a new set of regulations in 2028, in the short-term, that pinnacle will be the fiercely-contested FIA European Rallycross Championship – a title Team Principal Kenneth Hansen won an unrivalled 14 times between 1989 and 2008 during his own illustrious career behind the wheel, making him by some margin the most decorated driver in Euro RX history.

The squad that bears his name has been synonymous with World RX since the series’ inception back in 2014, clinching the coveted Teams’ crown on three occasions, with Timmy Hansen additionally racing to Drivers’ World Championship glory in 2019. Along the way, the Götene-based outfit has tallied no fewer than 22 victories and 100 podium finishes in the dual-surface discipline’s top-flight.

Hansen Motorsport is currently at a crossroads as it assesses its next step, but in an interview with Swedish daily newspaper Nya Lidköpings Tidning, Kenneth Hansen made no secret of the family-run team’s determination and desire to continue writing new chapters in the sport.

“As things stand right now, we’re not in a position to compete next year as we have no eligible cars available,” he explained. “That means we have a long way to go and need to find solutions if we want to race, but we are exploring every possible avenue.

“Perhaps the return to solely internal combustion-engined technology will revive rallycross, and it goes without saying that we are keen to participate in the European Championship next year, but we need to be smart about it. We don’t want to rush into anything or commit to something before being sure we can go through with it. It clearly needs to work from a financial perspective as well.

“That being the case, we’re taking a step back to reflect and evaluate a number of different directions. We don’t yet have a clear strategy, but as a company, we need to move forward in order to remain strong so we’re certainly not giving up.

“Even if we don’t make it onto the Euro RX grid next season, we will continue to work hard. While we would evidently like to be there in 2026, we also need to consider the scenario of returning at a later date. It’s a very difficult question to answer today, but we are making progress in a number of areas and I hope that ultimately, some of them will come to fruition.”
