RX Academy Champion Jesse Kallio will begin his international rallycross career at the World RX of Catalunya-Barcelona, round one of the FIA European Rallycross Championship for Super1600.

As his prize for winning the inaugural RX Academy last year, Kallio will race a SET Promotion Renault Twingo in the front-wheel drive class alongside experienced team-mate Timur Shigabutdinov.

The 18-year old Finn clinched the single make RX Academy title in a final-round decider at Kouvola in Finland last autumn, and also won the RX Academy on Ice series held earlier this year as part of the RallyX on Ice series, in Sweden and Norway.

“This is special for me, it’s my first international season and I’m really looking forward to it.," said Kallio, who has previously raced in Barcelona in a one-off drive with the SET Promotion team in 2016, where he finished fourth in a Super1600 Twingo. "There’s a lot of talented drivers in Euro RX, but the level in RX Academy last summer was really high. That helped me a lot, and of course also doing the winter season with RX Academy on Ice has helped me a lot to prepare for this year.

“It’s always good to start at a place you’ve already been to, where I had good speed in 2016. It was nice to drive the 2018 car in testing. Hopefully I can have a good start to the year and see what my speed is. The goal is to try and win some races and hopefully be on the podium, then you never know. This is an amazing prize.”

The Euro RX Super1600 series joins the FIA European Rallycross Championship at six rounds in 2018 (See calendar here). A capacity grid of 25 cars will start at round one in Barcelona.
