Latvia’s Reinis Nitiss put the break between the 11th and 12th rounds of the FIA World Rallycross Championship to good use last weekend, by competing on his home round of the FIA European Rally Championship, Rally Liepaja, and won the ERC2 category.

Swapping his regular EKS Audi S1 quattro World RX Supercar for an N4 Specification Mitsubishi Evo rally car, Nitiss finished the final round of the championship in difficult wet conditions sixth overall. He also registered for the Latvian Rally Championship, and finished second and first in the LRC2 category over the two days to finish third in the season standings.

“After the first few stages, we saw that our speed is good enough to battle for a podium spot, but keeping up the pace in such conditions was difficult. It is very easy to make mistakes on the fast roads of Liepaja region, and I did make a few, but luckily we got through everything,” said Nitiss, who was co-driven by Maris Neiksans. “This is an unexpected and unbelievable result. Rallying is a great way to do a lot of stage kilometres, gain experience and develop, but we never expected to win our class. I would like to commend the fantastic work by the Neiksans Rally Sport team to prepare and service our rally car.”

Nitiss will return to World RX action for the final round at Cape Town in South Africa next month, joined by regular EKS drivers Mattias Ekstrom and Topi Heikkinen.
