Latvia’s Artis Baumanis and Hungary’s Krisztian Szabo entered the penultimate round of the FIA European Rallycross Championship for Super1600 in Riga, Latvia last weekend tied on points at the top of the Championship.

It was Lithuania’s Kasparas Navickas who finished TQ (top qualified) in the Intermediate Classification at the event closest to his home, but he failed to finish semi-final one and didn’t make the final. Baumanis finished second in semi-final one to Volland Racing team mate Rokas Baciuska, but didn’t start the final at his home event after a throttle problem meant he was unable to make it to the grid.

Szabo and Baciuska started on the front row of the final and ran first and second for the whole race to finish one-two for the Volland Racing team. Finland’s Jussi-Petteri Leppihalme was third, scoring Set Promotion’s first podium since round two in Belgium. Estonia’s Janno Ligur finished fourth ahead of one of several home heroes in the category, Latvia’s Juris Spikis, who finished fifth in a Renault Twingo. Hungary’s Gergely Marton was forced to retire on the opening lap of the final.

The final round of the Euro RX Super1600 Championship will be held at the Estering in Germany next week. Szabo now holds a 12-point lead from Baumanis. Leppihalme is third and 2016 runner-up Denmark’s Ulrik Linnemann is in a three-way battle for fourth with Russia’s Timur Shigaboutdinov and Navickas.
