Latvia’s Janis Baumanis is driving for new team STARD in the FIA World Rallycross Championship this season, but missed out on making the semi-finals at round one in Barcelona three weeks ago after a spin in Q3.

Baumanis and team mate Timur Timerzyanov are planning to fight back this weekend in round two at Montalegre in Portugal. “Barcelona was good until Q3 when I spun after contact in the first corner. I lost 15 seconds when I tried to get the engine running again and when that happens it’s almost impossible to get back onto the top,” said Baumanis. “It wasn’t so lucky but instead of looking at that we’re looking at our speed which was quite good. At the test on Monday in Barcelona we also had good pace so everything is possible now. We have a lot of new things with the car and we’ve developed our driving so we have a good feeling for this race.”

Racing a Ford Fiesta Supercar in his second full season in World RX, Baumanis is settling into the STARD team and heads to a circuit he enjoys this weekend, hoping to use his experience to make the semi-finals and achieve a solid for the new team. “The feeling in the car is much better than last year I would say, everything is working correctly and we just need to be a bit more used to it because we didn’t manage any testing before the season. Things are good, I really like working with my engineer, he is the same guy that was my engineer when I finished fourth in the final in Argentina in 2015. This is a proper rallycross track and I like it a lot. I know Supercar and myself better than last year so it will be maximum attack from the first practice.”

Free Practice starts from 10.00 local time on Saturday morning in Portugal.
