Finland’s Toomas ‘Topi’ Heikkinen has been retained by FIA World Rallycross Championship winning team EKS for the 2017 season and will race an Audi S1 Supercar alongside World RX Drivers’ Champion, Mattias Ekstrom.

EKS recently announced that it will receive increased support from Audi for its 2017 World RX campaign. Heikkinen finished on the podium three times in 2016 with a third and second in the first two rounds (Portugal and Hockenheim) and third at the last round in Argentina, playing a key role in EKS securing the Teams’ Championship at the final round of the year in Rosario.

X Games gold medallist Heikkinen is looking forward to his second year with the squad. “It’s great that Mattias is placing his trust in me again this year. I’m very proud of continuing to be a part of this fantastic team,” said Heikkinen, who won the Belgian round of World RX at Mettet in 2014 and 2015.

“Never change a winning team,” said Ekstrom. “I’m happy about tackling the title defence project with Topi. He’s a young but very experienced race driver who’s a perfect fit for our team.”

The first round of the 12-event FIA World Rallycross Championship takes place at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in April (1-2).
