Latvia’s Janis Baumanis set the fastest time in Q1 at the penultimate round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship in Germany, the first time in his short Supercar career that he has topped the table in a qualifying session.

Baumanis beat championship leader Mattias Ekstrom in his race at the Estering by just 0.142 as the pair crossed the finish line, but second fastest overall was Ekstrom’s EKS team mate Topi Heikkinen, 0.027 off Baumanis’ time.

“It felt great in the car,” said Baumanis. “I believe I can be fast on this track because I have small experience from two races in Super1600 here. I knew the lines and everything, but with a Supercar it’s totally different driving and I’m really very happy that I can put it together and also be fast in a Supercar.” The reigning Super1600 champion is hoping for a repeat performance in Q2, where he will start on pole position in the last race. “Everybody had the same conditions here so you just have to drive as fast as you can and be smart. For me the aim is just to get a clean run, try and achieve a really good result and just enjoy the race.”

Hoonigan Racing Division’s Andreas Bakkerud was fourth quickest ahead of Volkswagen RX Sweden’s Johan Kristoffersson and Team Peugeot-Hansen’s Timmy Hansen. The Swede finished his race ahead of his team mate Sebastien Loeb who was 10th in Q1 and Petter Solberg who was 12th.
