Finnish legend Marcus Gronholm will race in the third round of the Projekt E electric rallycoss series as part of the Spa World RX of Benelux, the ninth round of the 2020 FIA World Rallycross Championship on 21-22 November.

Two-time World Rally Champion Gronholm – the team principal of the GRX Taneco World RX team – will drive the Ferratum Team's Ford Fiesta Projekt E car that was raced by Latvia’s Janis Baumanis in the World RX of Riga-Latvia in September. He tested recently in Finland. “I drove a total of three laps, so I'm well trained! I haven't been the biggest fan of electric cars to be honest, but when I drove this car, inside the cockpit the enthusiasm really surfaced. The car behaves very well and is very impressive,” said Gronholm.

Gronholm retired from professional competition in 2012, but raced a World RX-specification Hyundai i20 in the legends class of the RallyX Nordic event at Holjes in July. “I have said at home that I will no longer drive in races. But, while I'm in this situation where I will race in Belgium, I’m not going to get into any big fights, and this is certainly not a comeback. I’m getting involved to feel what these electric cars are like, as rallycross is going in that direction anyway.”

Ferratum Team manager Jani Paasonen thinks Gronholm will be competitive in the third round of Projekt E. “When Marcus puts on a helmet, he will definitely run for victory. I think he will take care of the job. It’s really big for us that a two-time world rally champion and a round winner of the European Rallycross Championship will drive a Ferratum Team car. It's also a big deal that Ferratum Team is the first WRX team to be involved in the electric car class in the World Championship series,” said Paasonen.

The first two Projekt E rounds of the season, at Holjes-Sweden and Riga-Latvia, were won by Americas Ken Block (Ford Fiesta).and France’s Cyril Raymond (Citroen C3). Finland’s Juha Rytkonen will race for Ferratum Team in World RX with a Ford Fiesta Supercar at Spa-Francorchamps.
