Sweden’s Mattias Ekstrom is focusing on closing in on FIA World Rallycross Drivers’ Championship points leader Johan Kristoffersson at the Logitech G FIA World RX of Pirineus-Barcelona 2030 and Logitech G FIA World RX of Catalunya this weekend to increase his chances of becoming a double World Champion.

KYB Team JC’s Ekstrom has taken two wins in 2020, at Holjes-Sweden and Riga-Latvia, and finished P2 three times. Only in round three in Kouvola-Finland was he off the podium. In four World RX starts at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya since 2015, Ekstrom has won two times (2016 and 2017) and crossed the finish line first in 2018, until he was handed a penalty for turn one contact with Norway’s Petter Solberg.

“The Barcelona track is a highlight of the year, but I have to say I still like the old start line more than the new one,” he explained. “It’s great to come to Barcelona, it’s near the CUPRA factory down the road and it’s great to have the support from there.”

Ekstrom is second in the World RX Drivers’ Championship, 17 points behind Sweden’s Kristoffersson and 32 points ahead of Finland’s Niclas Gronholm in P3. KYB Team JC leads the Teams’ Championship points.

2016 World RX Champion Ekstrom has a clear plan of what he needs to do this weekend. “If I want to be world champion I think it’s pretty fair and square, I need to beat Johan at least twice and I have two chances this weekend on Saturday and Sunday to bring the lead down to single numbers. That means from 17 down to nine, beating him by eight points. That is the hope and the target.”
