The 2020 FIA World Rallycross Championship finally got underway at Holjes-Sweden with the first ever double-header weekend, for rounds one and two. Sweden’s Johan Kristoffersson and Mattias Ekstrom claimed the wins, but there were stories to tell through the field.

Here’s what the teams had to say about the weekend in Holjes:

Kristoffersson Motorsport:

Johan Kristoffersson P1 / P3

Tommy Kristoffersson (Team Principal): “Yes, we are happy to be top of the championship, but we are never satisfied when someone else is doing a better job than us. We congratulate Mattias for his strong performance but we have to be more accurate and better next time.”

KYB Team JC:

Robin Larsson P7 / P5, Mattias Ekstrom P2 / P1

Robin Larsson: “It was a good first World RX weekend for the team. It was intense, but we were consistently in the top five. Having Mattias has been a very big bonus for me and the whole team. It just shows how important it is to have a fast driver like him by your side, we took tips from each other and without him I probably would not have been able to continue to develop my speed. I hope we see more of him this season. The puncture in the final today was a shame because it would have been perfect to have a one-two in the final. It was also sad to miss the final yesterday, but in terms of points things look good in the Teams’ Championship and I too scored good points. That Mattias beat Johan on pure pace shows we can fight with him. We’ve done the best we can as a team and we will carry that to Finland.”

GRX Taneco:

Niclas Gronholm P4 / P9, Timur Timerzyanov P12 / P10, Krisztian Szabo P9 / P7

Jussi Pinomaki (Team Manager): “The first race weekend of the season always brings a lot of unknowns and many challenges. You never know where you stand in terms of pace or what your competitors have done during the off-season. With two races, this weekend was even more difficult, as you have no time or resources to make big changes to the car. And even now there is not a lot of time before the next race, and we need to act fast, because a midfield result is not what we came here for. We want to fight for the win and we’ll do everything that’s possible to regain our position at the top.”

ALL-INKL.COM Muennich Motorsport:

Timo Scheider P3 / P4, Rene Muennich P14 / P12

Timo Scheider: “Good start to the 2020 season. P3 in a chaotic final on Saturday where I started P6. After the second lap I couldn’t see anything with a fogged windscreen, but mega job from all of the boys. Then another good day on Sunday with P4. Thanks for all the support from home. Now to Finland!”

Team Hansen:

Timmy Hansen P6 / P11, Kevin Hansen P8 / P2

Timmy Hansen: “My grid positions for all three qualifying races were from grid positions on the outside lane on Sunday and I ended up in traffic during every lap. That meant I wasn’t able to drive at my own pace. I struggled with some technical issues and had some difficulty getting the right balance with my set-up. I know the car is good and I believe we have a package that is able to win races. We will work hard with the team this week and hopefully arrive in Finland with new hopes of success. I’m very happy for Kevin. He put in a strong performance which earned him a deserved second place. His speed today was good from the beginning and it rewarded us with a first podium for the team this season.”

Monster Energy GCK RX Cartel:

Andreas Bakkerud P13 / P6, Liam Doran NC / NC

Stephane Orre (Team Manager): “We’ve seen some good improvements across the weekend despite some challenges for the Monster Energy GCK RX Cartel. We missed some preparation time ahead of Sweden RX, so the guys had a tough job on their hands to try to understand the cars as they were racing, and the team had to make adjustments on the go. Andreas put down an impressive fight and performance, especially considering the little time he’s had in the Megane so far. Liam also showed great pace and definitely knows how to handle the Megane but continuing technical issues since yesterday meant we couldn’t actually see him battle, so we now have to put in the work ahead of Finland to see both drivers at the top. Andreas showed today that the car’s performance is there and we certainly have the pace, so now it’s time to bring it all together for round 3 and 4 next week.”

GCK Bilstein:

Anton Marklund P5 / P8

Anton Marklund: “Unfortunately, we missed out on the final on Sunday - the first two corners weren’t great and we lost some time, plus some engine issues had us running low on power and then of course carnage ensued. The Megane is certainly carrying its battle scars today but I cannot wait to go to Finland. The pace we’ve shown this entire weekend, especially on the loose surface, is really competitive and Finland should have pretty slippery surface also, so I can’t wait to show you what we can do there.”

Guerlain Chicherit P16 / P13, Rokas Baciuska P11 / P14

Rokas Baciuska: “We’ve definitely had a tough race weekend here at the first couple of rounds of the championship in Sweden - from the turbo breaking which resulted in some engine issues later to struggles with the car setup from the beginning of the weekend, we’ve been fighting hard to find a good way for the GCK Clio R.S. RX to take on the rest of the pack. We did a lot of testing on very different tracks and our setup didn’t match what we needed here, so there’s work to be done now to find competitive pace.”
