Sweden’s Johan Kristoffersson is one of the biggest names in FIA World Rallycross Championship history, but it will be all new for him this weekend when he makes his Esports rallycross debut in the World RX Esports Invitational Catalunya Edition.

The double FIA World RX drivers’ champion is pleased to be returning to World RX, even if it has a different look to it this weekend. “Coming back to rallycross this year feels a bit more real now to be honest, because I’m back with you guys even if this press conference is a bit different to what we are used to," Kristoffersson told World RX commentator Andrew Coley in the RX Esports Invitational pre-event press conference.

"I was really excited to go back and drive the car because a rallycross car is a lot of fun to drive and has a lot of horsepower. I was so looking forward to the first free practice [in the World RX of Catalunya-Barcelona], to do the first launch in Barcelona, but now this has to wait for another few months, but at least we can have fun in this Esports race.”

Speaking about the 2020 World RX season, once it can get underway later this year, Kristoffersson said he expects the competition to be tough. He hasn’t raced in World RX since 2018. “For sure it’s going to be tight, it’s always tight when you are racing and everyone is trying their best. I saw some statistics that Timmy [Hansen] had seven lap records last year or something like that, Niclas [Gronholm] was also really fast and putting in some good performances, among a lot of other good drivers. For sure it’s going to be a tough season when it gets underway.”

But first, for his Esports debut Kristoffersson isn’t sure what to expect, but knows the invited Esports experts in the event will be fast. “Like Timmy and Kevin Hansen have said, the World Champion (DiRT Rally 2.0 Rallycross World Series Champion, Killian Dall’olmo) seems to be really fast, but the Esports guys are also putting in the hours, they’ve done their homework and this is what it takes to be good in any sport, whatever you do," he said.

"This is more like the sport I did before racing, which was cross country skiing. The more you train the better you get and here there is no limit, you can spend so many hours. In real racing you have a limit of time on the track, but here you can spend all day and night on the simulator. I will do my best this weekend and we will see how far it gets us. For sure it would be nice to beat the World Champion, but not maybe the World Champion in DiRT, the World Champion in rallycross.”

All the action, called by the World RX regular commentary pairing of Andrew Coley and Neil Cole, will be streamed live from 14:00 BST on Sunday April 19 on World RX YouTubeFacebook and on
