RX STARS IN ACTION AT GYMKHANA GRID
Saturday 7th of September 2019
The annual Gymkhana GRID event takes place this weekend in Warsaw, Poland, where FIA World Rallycross Championship leader Andreas Bakkerud and Monster Energy RX Cartel team mate Liam Doran will do battle.
World RX stars Bakkerud and Doran are driving in the rear-wheel drive class, but a range of other former and current rallycross drivers, including 2014 and 2015 World RX Drivers’ Champion Petter Solberg and World RX podium finisher Ken Block will also battle for honours.
Driving in the Monster Energy event as part of his farewell tour, Solberg is driving the Volkswagen Polo R RX Supercar that he raced in World RX in 2017 and 2018, and is joined by son Oliver Solberg, driving the Citroen DS3 Supercar that his father won back to back World RX Drivers’ titles with. Sir Chris Hoy, who made his World RX debut at Catalunya RX this season and scored FIA World Championship points, is driving a Hyundai R5 rally car, Finland’s Riku Tahko is driving a new Mini rally car similar to the Mini RX Supercar has previously raced in the FIA European Rallycross Championship and Poland’s Marcin Wicik is driving his Ford Focus RX Supercar.
“For sure it’s going to be really exciting - Gymkhana GRiD is a really cool event, and it went well for me last year in South Africa. I’m going to try my best to fight for the win this year. Poland is a big motorsport country, so I think there will be a lot of fans. It’s a new location, a new track; so I’m really excited. I really wanted to beat my father - so this year I will be pushing again, and hopefully I’ll come away with a good result,” said Oliver Solberg, who won the RallyX Nordic Championship last year in the DS3.
However, Great Britain’s Oliver Bennett’s planned second start at GRiD now unfortunately won’t happen, as the Xite Racing team has had to return to its HQ in the UK to repair the Mini RX Supercar after Bennett’s Q4 accident at Loheac, ahead of Latvia RX in Riga next weekend.Share this story on Facebook Share this story on Twitter
