Set Promotion, the team that operates GRX Taneco in the FIA World Rallycross Championship, has become the first top rallycross squad to form its own Esports team.

SET Esports has signed RX2 International Series driver Sami-Matti Trogen and experienced Esports driver Joni Heikkinen to race for the team in 2019. Heikkinen will also make his rallycross debut this season in the RX Academy series, which Trogen won last season before stepping up to RX2 full-time for this year. The Set Promotion team has won nine European Rallycross Championship crowns, the most recent being last year when Latvia’s Reinis Nitiss took the Euro RX Supercar title in a Ford Fiesta. This year Nitiss will be a race and development driver for GRX Taneco in World RX.

“This is a hugely exciting time for SET. Not only have we created a new programme to enter into a new world, but with both Joni and Sami-Matti racing in Esports and with us in rallycross, we’re combining both of those worlds together. SET has always been forward thinking, so we’re excited to be the first rallycross team to have our own official Esports team,” said head of SET Esports, Jussi Pinomäki.

“This is just the start though, we have some very interesting and unique things we’re working on that we hope to introduce through the year, as we evolve into this new world. At SET we have worked hard in recent years, in both European rallycross and with RX Academy to discover and develop new talent, and that is no different in this new sector.”
