GRX Taneco Team is hoping to end the 2018 FIA World Rallycross Championship in style at the World RX of Cape Town in South Africa next month.

Finland’s Niclas Gronholm has qualified for every semi-final so far in 2018 in GRX’s Hyundai i20 Supercar and Russia’s Timur Timerzyanov has also shown strong pace. Gronholm finished fourth for the third time in 2018 at Estering in Germany last weekend and is targeting his first podium of the season in South Africa. “Overall, it was a good weekend (at Estering). Qualifying for the final and finishing fourth is a good result, but I admit I was hoping for better. I really wanted to be on the podium this time, but it wasn’t to be. We’ve got one race left to go and I hope I’ll be able to finish the season in style,” said Gronholm. The Finn is seventh in the World RX Drivers’ Championship and has started the final four times this year.

Former Euro RX Champion Timerzyanov has made the semi-finals eight times in 11 rounds and is 10th in the points, but didn’t qualify for the top 12 in Germany. It’s not what we were hoping for. I lacked pace in Q1, went off in Q2 and was disqualified in Q3. At the first corner, Cyril Raymond and I nudged each other and in my haste to right the car, I accidentally touched a button that changes the settings, which is not allowed,” said Timerzyanov. “Rules are rules. I’m just looking forward to the last round of the season. I’ll prepare as best I can to try and get a good result in Cape Town.”

GRX Team Manager Jussi Pinomaki thinks Timerzyanov can shine in Cape Town. “Germany was tough for Timur, but he didn’t give up and he showed promising speed in Sunday’s qualification races. I know he’s capable of bouncing back and I’m sure the final round will be his chance to shine,” he said.
