PSRX Volkswagen Sweden’s Johan Kristoffersson could secure his second FIA World Rallycross Championship title this weekend at the first ever World RX of USA.

The Swede enters the first World RX event at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas with a 73 point leads in the Drivers’ Championship, after winning eight of the first nine races this season. If he is to secure his second Championship crown in as many seasons driving a Volkswagen Polo R for PSRX, Kristoffersson needs to leave the event 60 points ahead of his nearest rival.

If he takes TQ (top qualifier) in the Intermediate Classification, Kristoffersson will take the title regardless of what any of his rivals do in the event.

“You know I say all the time that I’m not thinking too much to the Championship and really just focusing on the races that are right in front of me. Do you think anybody is believing that? Honestly, I try not to think too much about what could happen, what might happen if this happens or that happens. But then when you are in the gym or sitting on an aeroplane for a long time, then your mind wanders a little bit and, of course, you think a bit to this thing,” said Kristoffersson. “What won’t change is my approach. OK, I have some gap to the guy in second, so I can maybe afford to take some more risks with the races. But I want to drive clean, stay out of trouble and do what we have to do. Racing in America’s going to be really exciting, I can’t wait to get out there, look at the track and find out what this thing is going to be like.”

In the battle for second in the points EKS Audi Sport’s Mattias Ekstrom is Kristoffersson’s closest rival, but Team Peugeot Total’s Timmy Hansen is in sixth just 18 points behind. EKS’ Andreas Bakkerud and Peugeot’s are also still in the middle of the fight.
