Thursday 27th of September 2018

The FIA World Rallycross Championships visits the USA for the first time ever this weekend for round ten of the 2018 season at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas.

Here’s five reasons why we can’t wait for the World RX of USA to get underway.

New Country for World RX

Since the FIA World Rallycross Championship was formed in 2014, events have been held in South America and Canada, but September 28 – 30 will be the first time ever that World RX drivers have competed for Championship points in the USA, which is the 16th different country the Championship has visited.

Brand New Circuit

COTA’s new permeant rallycross circuit, situated between turns 12 and 16 of the Formula 1 layout was used for the first time at the ARX of COTA in July and this weekend will be only the second ever event on the circuit. Using a unique layout, the shortest circuit of the season is a mix of technical corners with a first corner joker lap, and a jump. Action is set to be fierce.

Champion Elect

PSRX Volkswagen Sweden’s Johan Kristoffersson leads the World RX Drivers’ Championship by 73 points with three rounds to go. If he leaves COTA with a 60-point advantage, Kristoffersson will claim his second World RX title in a row. The PSRX team could also wrap up the Teams’ Championship this weekend with Kristoffersson and two-time World RX Champion Petter Solberg.

Festival Vibe

Following the success of the Speedmachine Festival at Silverstone in the UK in May, COTA will host its own festival this weekend, where after the action on track has finished on track on Saturday, Grammy award winning Ludacris and DJ Jazzy Jeff will perform in the Austin360 Amphitheatre. Test drives will also be available on the COTA circuit, as well as classic Austin street food.

ARX Showdown

Alongside the tenth round of World RX, the final round of the Americas Rallycross (ARX) will take place at COTA. The Championship is led by Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross driver Scott Speed ahead of Volkswagen Beetle team mate Tanner Foust, with Subaru Rally Team USA’s Patrik Sandell in third overall. Also in action will be Toomas ‘Topi’ Heikkinen, driving for the Subaru team, World RX regular Oliver Bennett and Liam Doran, driving a Renault Megane RS RX for World RX team GC Kompetition.
