WORLD RX DRIVERS PREPARE FOR FIRST TASTE OF SILVERSTONE
Four leading FIA World Rallycross Championship competitors, including Sebastien Loeb and Andreas Bakkerud, will take the opportunity to sample Silverstone’s all-new rallycross circuit this weekend as wild-card entries for the MSA British Rallycross Championship curtain raiser.
The Silverstone Circuit in the UK is one of two brand new venues on the FIA World Rallycross Championship calendar for 2018, the other being the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas for the inaugural World RX of USA.
While this year’s World RX of Great Britain at Silverstone, which is being held as part of the Speedmachine Festival, will occur on May 25 – 27, the first ever rallycross event at the circuit takes place this weekend, round one of the MSA British Rallycross Championship. As such, in preparation for the 2018 World RX season and the Speedmachine weekend, a number of World RX teams and drivers will compete in the national race on Saturday.
Leading the ‘all-comers’ will be Team Peugeot Total pairing Loeb and Timmy Hansen, who will race 2018 Peugeot 208 WRX Supercars, while new EKS Audi Sport signing Bakkerud switches to a 2017 Audi S1 quattro for the event having been busily testing the 2018-specification EKS Audi S1 at Loheac last week.
With Guerlain Chicherit’s Prodrive-developed GC Kompetition Renault Megane R.S Supercar still being prepared for the 2018 World RX season, the Frenchman will nonetheless sget some useful Silverstone mileage in at the wheel of the Euro RX G-Fors Renault Clio.
Elsewhere, Sweden’s Kevin Eriksson, who won the German round of World RX at Estering in 2016, will race an RX150 single-seater buggy on Saturday to learn the circuit ahead of the Speedmachine weekend. He will go up against 2017 British RX champion Nathan Heathcote, who is planning to race in the RX2 International Series this season - which will also feature on the Speedmachine bill - and is also using the buggy class to learn the new circuit this weekend.
