Sweden’s Johan Kristoffersson claimed the first fastest qualifying time of the 2017 FIA World Rallycross Championship season having been fastest in the first Free Practice session of the year.

Driving PSRX Volkswagen Sweden’s new Volkswagen Polo GTi, Kristoffersson overtook reigning World RX Champion Mattias Ekstrom early in their race to set the fastest time, in wet conditions. “That’s not a bad way to start the season for me and the team,” smiled Kristoffersson.

America’s Ken Block won the last race after overtaking his team mate, Norway’s Andreas Bakkerud, at the second corner and is second in the Intermediate Classification after Q1, with Kristoffersson’s team mate, Petter Solberg second to Block in the final race of Q1 and third overall.

Ekstrom was fourth fastest, little more than a tenth of a second ahead of Bakkerud. Sweden’s Timmy Hansen was top Team Peugeot-Hansen driver in sixth, finishing just behind Ekstrom in race four. Hansen’s team mate, France’s Sebastien Loeb is ninth in the Intermediate Classification after Q1, he had a close race with Sweden’s Kevin Eriksson after overtaking France’s Jean-Baptiste Dubourg on the first lap of race three. Britain’s Guy Wilks was in the same race as Kristoffersson and is tenth overall.

In the FIA European Rallycross Championship, former Champion Robin Larsson was fastest with 2016 RX2 front-runner Thomas Bryntesson second.
