EKSTROM AIMING FOR TOP FOUR
Sweden’s Mattias Ekstrom finished third at the end of the first day at Lydden Hill and thinks he is in with a chance to win his first FIA World Rallycross Championship event of the year, if he can qualify well at the Intermediate Classification today.
“I had two enjoyable races yesterday. I don’t know why, but in heat one the throttle stuck open at the start. I just had to make the best of it, so seventh in total was ok. Then in heat two, I was second off the line and passed PG (Andersson) on lap one and drove as well as I could, but ran out of talent into the joker and got it sideways and lost a second. I’m third at the moment so pretty happy,” said the EKS driver, who is enjoying the Lydden Hill circuit.
“Petter (Solberg) had two good heats, if he continues digging in that way it will be difficult to catch him up but generally I’m happy to be back in the car enjoying a great rallycross track with some fast flowing corners. I just love the place. I think if you are in the top four you can win your semis or your final, so I think the aim of the game is to be in the top four after the heats, then I will be very pleased. If I can be top four after the heats I can definitely give it a go for the overall win because if you’re fifth or worse you will struggle to have a chance.”
Ekstrom is also pleased with team mate Anton Marklund’s progress, who showed good pace on day one. “I’m very impressed with his job. The funny thing is was that he was faster than me on the tarmac and I was faster than him on the gravel, so that was the surprise of my day.”
